Description
All too often buying a piece of history means endless restoration work and a bottomless budget- but not in this case! With a major refit undertaken in the winters of 2024/2025, this traditional hand built wooden Mallorcan lläut now not only has a completely overhauled Mercedes 63 h.p. engine with new silencer and sound insulation, all new upholstery and sun canopy, but also a bow thruster, electric anchor winch, stern anchor and freshwater shower.
Her wooden hull and superstructure has also been repaired and maintained in fine detail and as these recent photos show, she arguably looks better than the day she was built with new paint in and out, antifouling up to date and lovely detailing throughout.
All work carried out by a local specialist with close ties to the original builder. A 'Llaüt de Señor' to be sure.
This is also the original 0 Km boat as she was built by hand in 1969 in the very port where she is lying, Porto Colom, by the local shipyard, Astilleros Porto Colom. The port itself is named after Christopher Colombus and whether you subscribe to the theory that he was born in Felanitx or simply visited the port, it has been an important home and source of the traditional llaüt design since at least the middle ages. No Mercedes motor back then but it was said that a traditional llaüt trading vessel could travel from Soller to Barcelona in as little as 9 hours just under sail.
What is undeniable is that you cannot get a more authentic way to enjoy Mallorca's amazing coastline than in this highly seaworthy and surpisingly comfortable tradtional craft.
Now asking considerably less than has been invested in her recent refit, Tio Pepe is the perfect accessory to your traditional finca or waterside property. Or just for lovers of traditional craftmanship. Maintenance can be continued by the same specialists who have always looked after her. And we can even help you with a berth in her historic Porto Colom home and not at crazy Mallorca prices- just €1700 per season currently.
